A zone of energetic charged particles that are captured by and held around a planet by the planet’s magnetic field is called a Van Allen radiation belt. They were discovered in 1958 by James Van Allen; hence the name. Earth has two Van Allen belts. Most of the particles that form these belts come from solar wind and cosmic rays – they are nothing but radiation and destruction, and yet, here we are, flourishing in all our beauty and strength under their grip, protected by nothing else than our own planet.
